Heart Math Tutoring

HMT Winston-Salem is excited to partner with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools for our 3rd year to provide programming at no cost to families thanks to support from the philanthropic community. Reflecting national trends, early math support is a critical need for students in Winston-Salem, NC. Our community is missing out on significant potential when just 44% of Winston 4th graders are proficient in math. Teachers and families often have limited capacity to provide the individualized support students need to develop a concrete understanding of numbers (“number sense”), but volunteers can help. HMT’s activity-based, structured curriculum and placement of a Program Coordinator at the school site enables hundreds of volunteers to be effective with a commitment of one hour per week while minimizing extra work for school staff. Established in 2013, Heart Math Tutoring has served more than 4,500 students to date in Charlotte, NC and Charleston, SC, with 98% of those students making meaningful growth in math on program pre/post assessments, and over 90% of teachers consistently report that students are more confident and enthusiastic towards math as a result of the program. Heart Math Tutoring operates in partnership with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

Heart Math Tutoring, is a non-profit that recruits and supports volunteers to serve as math tutors for elementary school students in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. We provide training, an easy-to-follow curriculum with interactive activities and games, and a Program Coordinator onsite to support students and tutors. Volunteers say that it’s the highlight of their week! Elementary students in WS/FCS eagerly await volunteer tutors for the 2025/26 school year! Many students are performing below grade level in math and can catch up with individualized support. Volunteers are needed for 30 minutes or 1 hour per week at Bolton, Easton, and Petree Elementary Schools starting in October 2025. Volunteering with Heart Math Tutoring is a fun, effective way to make a difference by working one-on-one with students for 30-minutes or an hour each week from October - April.
